Nigeria to start exportation of yams to Europe come June

The minister of Agriculture and Rural Development said Nigeria will start exporting yams. He said Nigeria's agricultural sector will soon regain its lost glory as a major food producer and exporter. The minister also insisted that Nigeria has everything to be a key player in the international processed food market.

Audu Ogbeh, the minister of Agriculture and Rural Development said a container of yams will soon leave the
shores of Nigeria for the European continent.
Specifically, the minister said the container will leave the country on the 29th of June this year.

He disclosed this during an interaction with journalists while giving the scorecard of his ministry since the President Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government took over power two years ago.

Specifically, the minister said the container will leave the country on the 29th of June this year

The minister maintained that Nigeria's agricultural sector will regain its lost glory as a major food producer and exporter within the next two years.
He said the country is doing well in the exportation of of vegetables, beans and cowpeas to India, as well as cashew to Vietnam.
He said: “In another two years, we will be back on the world stage where every country had recognized and expected Nigeria to live up to the name – Major Food Producer.
“On the 29th of June this year, the first container of yams will be leaving the shores of Nigeria for UK.
“Yes, we have been dealing with vegetables and a lot of other produce already and we will continue to be selling pulses mainly beans and cowpeas to India.
“We will soon be back exporting cocoa again on a large scale, although we are exporting very little now; and cashew nuts to Vietnam which we intend to start processing here very soon.
“The processed cashew nuts will be exported to Wal-Mart and other major supermarkets across the globe.
“We are on our way. It is just about time.
“The beautiful thing is that Nigerians make me proud. In spite of the trauma they have been through, their response to the call by the President to return to agriculture has been absolutely successful – Young and old, civil servants, military men, journalists, everybody is on his way back to agriculture.
“We only have the challenge, now, of giving them what they need, and we will definitely meet that challenge.”
The minister also insisted that Nigeria has everything to be a key player in the international processed food market.
Highlighting the challenges the country need to overcome before playing a key role in the processed food market globally, the minister listed procurement of machineries, stable electricity and value of Naira.
“We have to process what we grow. There are very few things we eat raw especially vegetables and fruits. But rice, sugar, milk, sorghum, millet, cassava – among those items; we are almost there.
“Nigerians may find that difficult to accept now because the prices are so high and that can be explained by the sudden drop in the value of the Naira. Machineries need to be procured. We need to stabilize electricity otherwise the cost of production and processing gets too high.
“Otherwise, there is no question whether Nigeria can or will get there. It is just a matter of time.
“Unfortunately, for agriculture once a country slows down like we did for nearly 30 years, it becomes difficult to restart the engine.
“But for Nigeria, the people are incredible and they are doing it. It took Brazil 30 years and India 50 years to be able to get to where they are now. It won’t take us that long.
“In 10 years, I tell you, people across planet earth who want to respect Nigeria on agriculture will definitely have to do so; because they have no choice. We are on our way.”

A number of police officers feared dead as naval officers attack police station in Calabar

Several police officers are feared to have been killed Tuesday night after suspected officials of the Nigerian Navy stormed a police division in Calabar, southern Nigeria.
Witnesses said the attack, which began shortly after 8:30 p.m., was still underway as at 10:19 p.m. at Akim Divisional Headquarters.
“The police station is still burning as we speak,” a horrified witness told PREMIUM TIMES.
Naval spokesperson, Suleiman Dahun, said he wasn’t aware of the development as at 10:26 p.m., promising to revert after his findings.
Police spokesperson, Jimoh Moshood, could not be reached for comments Tuesday night.
Sources said the unrest was a continuation of an initial skirmish between a police traffic officer and a naval officer at a traffic light near the Calabar Stadium along the Airport Road on Tuesday afternoon.
“Some naval officers ran the red light and police traffic officers intervened, but rather than listen, they descended on the policemen and beat them up,” a witness said. “This was around 5 p.m.”
“Police officers now called for back up and and the Navy also called for reinforcement and they took over the road leading to the airport.
“But the Navy Commander and police commissioner in the state intervened and the two sides backed down,” the witness said.
“However, around 8:00 p.m., when everyone thought the matter had been resolved, naval officers descended on Akim Police Station and started shooting and burnt down the facility.
“We confirmed three bodies but we feared there are more,” the witness said.
The witness also accused the naval officers of blocking fire fighters from extinguishing the inferno set at the police station.

Senate passes Buhari's Anti-corruption Bill

The Nigerian Senate has passed an executive bill proposed to enlist international assistance in the country’s efforts to tackle criminal matters, including money laundering, asset acquisition from proceeds of corruption and other forms of illicit financial flows.

The proposed law, Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Between Nigeria and Other Foreign Countries, SB 224, 2017, was read for the third time and subsequently passed by the Senate on Tuesday.

The passage followed the presentation of the joint report on the bill by the Senate committees on foreign affairs, chaired by Monsurat Sunmonu (APC-Oyo); judiciary, human rights and legal matters, chaired by David Umaru (APC-Niger) and anti-corruption, chaired by Chukwuma Utazi, PDP-Enugu.

The bill – and another one on Money Laundering Prevention and Prohibition – was sent to the Senate by Pres. Buhari on January 27, 2016, before it was finally passed by the lawmakers on Tuesday.

The bill seeks to get relevant international assistance in cases of money laundering and provide framework for “other countries to assist in provision of and obtaining of evidence, making of arrangements for persons to give evidence”.

“The bill also hopes to elicit international assistance in criminal investigations, recovery, forfeiture or confiscation of property in respect of offences.

“The restraining of dealings in property or the freezing of asset that may be recovered, forfeited or confiscated in respect of offences.

“The execution of request for search and seizure, the location and identification of witnesses and suspects,” Mr. Buhari wrote to the Senate in January 2016.

Fayose tells Buhari to resign if he truly loves Nigeria

Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to resign if he truly loves the country.

Fayose said this is because ill heath is not allowing the President to effectively discharge his constitutional duties.

Taking to his Facebook wall, the Special Assistant to Ekiti State Governor on Public Communications and New Media, Mr. Lere Olayinka, said Fayose gave this advice when he addressed newsmen in Lagos on Tuesday.

He noted that the governor said being an avowed corruption fighter, Buhari is now under moral burden to save Nigeria from needless stagnation arising from his heath challenges that have impacted negatively on his performance.

Fayose reportedly said that fighting corruption was not limited to ‎discovering large sums of money here and there, but doing the right thing at the right time.

The governor said that taking a bow when necessary was also an indication of being morally upright.

Olayinka wrote: “The governor, who appraised the two years of the Buhari administration, said the All Progressives Congress-led Federal Government had failed to deliver on its promises.

“So far, the APC-led Federal Government has been a government of misadventure and Nigerians are worse for it. They say they are fighting corruption but are shielding corrupt elements within their fold.

“Members of the opposition defect to the APC for protection. Fighting corruption is more than discovering huge sums of money all over the place, with nobody being traced to be the owners, moral corruption too is bad. ‎

“He can do us the great help by resigning. Not resigning borders on his integrity.‎ His absence allows others to suppress and oppress others and that means he is allowing others ‎ to suppress their fellow human beings.‎

“There are many governments in one and they are clueless.‎ We need an active president, going by our numerous challenges. ‎How long will Nigerians wait for an incapacitated president?

‎”We cannot wait again for somebody to hold us to ransom.‎ I don’t have any bad blood against Buhari; Osinbajo has no powers without the president. He owes us the duty to tell us the state ‎of his health.”

On the performance of the economy, Fayose said it had gone from bad to worse.‎

He also lamented that the middle class had been wiped off.

“There is no middle class anymore. Economic indicators are not cheery at last. They borrow money on a daily basis and committing funds that ought to accrue to all tiers of government to servicing the loans,” Fayose added.

Angry Nigerians rate Buhari's administration poor in just conducted poll by APC

Nigerians have shocked the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, by rating the performances of President Muhammadu Buhari and state governors of the APC poor in a poll conducted by the party on its verified twitter handle.

"Two years on: What's your assessment of the APC-led administration in Nigeria? Kindly vote and RT," the party asked on the micro-blogging site. There were four options; Poor, Average, Excellent and Indifferent.

The online poll recorded 14, 532 votes with 54 percent of the respondents rating the administration as poor; 33 percent rated the administration as average while 10 percent voted for excellent. Three percent of the respondents were indifferent.

The APC made use of the social media to appeal to the youths during the 2015 general elections, which was won by Buhari, defeating the then incumbent, Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

May 29 marks two years of the advent of the President Buhari administration at the federal level, as well as the mid-term anniversary for the majority of state administrations in the country. APC controls 24 states, PDP governs 11 while APGA has one state.

White House Connunications Director reigns from position

The White House communications director has resigned only three months after being hired by President Donald Trump.

Mike Dubke, an experienced Republican strategist, was hired to revamp the White House media strategy.

As part of the shake-up, White House press secretary Sean Spicer will reportedly hold on to his position, but there will be fewer media briefings.

The reshuffle follows reports of disarray in the White House communications team.

Mr Dubke is leaving on good terms, according to Axios News, a politics website which first reported his exit.

BBC reports that White House adviser Kellyanne Conway said Mr Dubke had agreed to stay on until Mr Trump returned from his overseas trip to the Middle East and Europe on Saturday.

“He has expressed his desire to leave the White House and made very clear that he would see through the president’s international trip,” she told Fox News.

President Trump is reported to have been frustrated with White House messaging amid congressional and FBI investigations into whether his campaign officials colluded with an alleged Kremlin plot to help him win the presidency.

He recently raised the idea of scrapping the daily news briefing altogether and holding one himself every fortnight.

Mr Dubke, who previously worked as senior partner for Republican political advertising company Crossroads Media, was not part of the Trump campaign and was not seen as a loyalist.

The White House has not named a successor for Mr Dubke.

However, Corey Lewandowski, former campaign manager for Mr Trump, was spotted leaving the White House on Monday.

Mr Lewandowski was forced out in June last year amid reports of a power struggle with Jared Kushner, Mr Trump’s son-in-law and a senior White House adviser.

However, Mr Kushner is now reportedly under scrutiny as part of the FBI’s investigation into alleged Moscow influence.

There are reports that Mr Lewandowski could rejoin the administration soon as part of White House efforts to fight the narrative that Mr Trump is too close to Russia.

This wasn’t the first time I would be moving laptops, mobile phones and their accessories from one outlet to the other. Since I joined the company in March and I was assigned the job of a delivery man, it had been my idea to divert the goods and abscond.

Before I got to Kaduna, I already contacted one of the buyers. She bought N1.4 million worth of phones, laptops and phone accessories while I also sold in unit to some other buyers as well.”

Nigerians can now own houses with just N30,000 says Osinbajo

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo says under the N100 billion social housing scheme of the present administration, anyone who can afford N30,000/month will be able to own a house.

WATCH  VIDEO AFTER THE CUT..........

He said this at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday at an event tagged "A Smile for Every Nigerian" organised to commemorate the administration's second anniversary.

The acting president explained that the housing scheme was part of the administration's social intervention prpgramme that had not been mentioned.

He said: "This is 100bn set aside for the Family Home Fund our Social Housing Project. The 100b is a yearly contribution to our N1trn Social Housing Fund, the largest in the history of the country. The World Bank and the African Development Bank are contributors to the Fund. From this Fund, developers will borrow 80% of the cost of project and counter fund with their own 20%.

"The same fund will enable us to provide inexpensive mortgages for hundreds of thousands across the country who want to own homes. Anyone who can afford N30,000 will be able to buy a home under our new social housing fund scheme. Already, the project has started in 11 states. We expect that this family housing fund will jump start and expand construction exponentially across the country."

Speaking further, the acting president maintained that the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth should translate to jobs.

"First the trickle down model has proved far too slow to stem the tide of poverty in one of the fastest growing populations in the world. Secondly, most of the growth was on account of the oil sector which is capital intensive but not labour intensive.

"So, while we were recording growth levels of 7% because of the high oil prices, unemployment figures grew, the acting president stated.

He sad in developing the APC manifesto and the economic development plans, the administration knew it had to directly intervene with a massive social investment programme that would tackle poverty and exclusion across the various spectra.

Zimbabwean minister says the police are free to defecate and urinate anywhere they please

Zimbabwean Home Affairs deputy minister, Obedingwa Mguni, sees nothing wrong with reports of police officers urinating and or defecating in public places, particularly at roadblocks, arguing there is no enabling Act to criminalise the practice.

There are reports that police officers are forced to use the bush due to lack of ablution facilities at the countless roadblocks they mount on the country’s roads and Mguni told the country’s Senators it was not a criminal offence.

Mguni told the Senators, “According to the Constitution, police are bringing peace, investigating crime, preventing crimes and they are also doing it on behalf of every ministry that is in Zimbabwe. So, if there is an Act that is being provided by the ministry who is heading the environment saying no one should urinate behind a tree, police will enforce that one.

“That is their duty and we do not enforce anything which is not lawful and where we do not have an Act to act upon it. We will act only when there is an Act that has been passed and is given to us to make the people act lawfully.

“Therefore, if urinating behind the tree is now illegal, then the police will be informed by the Minister of Environment.”

The Deputy Home Affairs Minister was responding to a question by MDC-T Matabeleland South Senator Sithembile Mlotshwa, who wanted to know “how police were enforcing anti-pollution laws” when “we see officers at roadblocks urinating and defecating in the open and affecting people by nature’s smell. How do they apprehend the public?”

Ironically, police are known to arrest people who urinate in public, demanding a $5 fine for the offence, and imbibers – particularly those who frequent bottle stores – have tales to tell of their encounters after being caught urinating.

Mguni’s answer that the practice was not illegal because of a lack of enabling legislation did not amuse the Senator.

Buhari's war against corruption is just noise says PDP

The Leadership of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), under Senator Ahmed Makarfi, has described President Muhammadu Buhari’s fight against corruption as nothing but noise orchestrated to kill democracy in the country.

The PDP also said that, through its previous governments, it laid the foundation and commenced the real fight against corruption in Nigeria through the creation and sustenance of all the anti-graft institutions operating in the country today.

The National Publicity Secretary of the Party’s National Caretaker Committee, Dayo Adeyeye, stated in Abuja while recounting some of the failures of the APC-led federal government in the past two years.

According to him, under the PDP administrations, most of those who were tried by the anti-graft agencies were PDP members; stressing that the Party never made any effort to shield its members from prosecution and investigation as is the case with the APC government.

He said that President Buhari’s ‘hype in corruption chase’ has left sour taste on the tongues of most Nigerians given the dishonesty and charade that has characterized the actions of his government so far.

Adeyeye added that Nigerians and the international community have lost confidence in INEC under the APC due to alleged loss of integrity and independence it demonstrated in the conduct of gubernatorial elections in Edo, Ondo and Bayelsa states and other subsequent elections.

The Party spokesman further said that the public will agree that the PDP left a stronger Judiciary which the APC is discrediting with impunity through the flouting of court orders at will.

He said: “Beginning with the issue of corruption in this discussion is critical in line with the APC/President Buhari’s ‘Change Agenda’ and ‘hype in corruption chase’ which has left sour taste given the dishonesty and charade that has characterized the actions of this Government so far.

“For the record, ‘corruption’ is endemic in our system since the Military era and using it to weep citizens’ sentiments is absurd while playing ignorant of honest achievements made by PDP Governments to combat this alarming menace.

“The Question is what has the APC done to fight corruption? Nothing! Yes indeed nothing except noise, hounding, torturing, flouting of court orders and vilification of opposition leaders and members in and out of courts/incarcerations without proving anything; harassment, intimidation, indiscriminate arrests and detention of Judges in order to cow them to desecrate the Judiciary and deny the people justice; promote Gestapo State and by extension, kill democracy.

“On the much celebrated anti-corruption fight of the APC therefore, it must be noted that it was previous PDP governments that created and sustained all the institutions for fighting corruption such as the EFCC and the ICPC.

“Under the PDP administrations most of those who were tried by these agencies were PDP members. The PDP never made any effort to shield PDP members from prosecution and investigation as is the case with the APC Government which has made it a policy to sweep all the dirt of its members under the Carpet.

“Instead of entrenching transparency and accountability in governance processes, the APC’s recent ‘Whistle Blowing Policy’ for instance, appears to be a mockery of the System given the reprehensible and comic actions so far under it by finding ‘orphaned monies’ in all nooks and cranny of the Country by the EFCC.

“Electoral process – Nigerians and the international community have lost confidence in INEC under the APC by not allowing it to perform its statutory functions without interference as an unbiased Umpire but instead, functions as its department which was evident in the negative Conduct of Gubernatorial Elections in Edo, Ondo and Bayelsa states and other subsequent elections where it demonstrated loss of integrity and independence.

“The Judiciary – We know that the public will agree with us that that the PDP left a stronger Judiciary which the APC is discrediting with impunity as it flouts court orders at will.”

So rude! IPOB supporters gift Nnamdi Kanu a cow named Buhari

Teacher arrested for taking the blood and finger nails of two pupils

The Ondo State Police Command has arrested two teachers identified as Blessing Omowera and Sola Kalejaye for allegedly using human parts for ritual purpose.

While Omowera works at the nursery and primary school, Kalajaye, is said to be a teacher in a secondary school in the town.

“After she was arrested, she confessed that she was sent by somebody who wanted to use the blood and fingernails for ritual purposes; that was why we arrested the sender (Kalejaye).”

The police spokesman noted that Omowera had already been charged to court, while Kalejaye was still in custody undergoing interrogation.

400 British Airways passengers stranded in Nigeria over IT problems

The IT problems have led to thousands of passengers of the airline having their flights disrupted and canceled.
Some of the passengers described the situation as “chaotic,” with some criticizing British Airlines for poor communication with passengers.
The airline has, however, apologized to its passengers and advised them not to come to the airport until the issue is resolved.
Speaking on Sunday, a source close to the airline disclosed that the Heathrow-Lagos British Airways flight had departed London and would land in Lagos at “any moment from now,” but as at the time of filing this report at the airport, the aircraft was yet to land.
It was also learnt that British Airways counter staff were present at the airport attending to passengers.
The source said that those who were booked in hotels requested for the service, stressing that the moment operations are stabilized, they would be the first to be considered by the airline.
“Our passengers have always been our priority. Some of them who insisted on going as scheduled were put in other airlines that are available to London. In this area, Virgin and KLM have been helpful. Some of the passengers were booked into hotels,” he explained.
“This set of passengers would be given priority when we operate. However, the flight from Heathrow to Lagos for today has departed and it is scheduled to land in Lagos in the evening. We hope to airlift passengers from Lagos Airport to London at night.”

In Texas man sues a lady for texting during their date

A man from Texas sued a woman this week for $17.31 – the price of a cinema ticket – after she irritated him by texting during a movie.

Brandon Vezmar, 37, of Austin, claimed Crystal Cruz was “a threat to civilised society” after she used her phone to read and send text messages “at least 10-20 times in 15 minutes” during the date on Saturday.

“It was kind of a first date from hell,” he was quoted as saying. “She started about 15 minutes after the movie began. “This is one of my biggest pet peeves.” Mr Vezmar asked Ms Cruz to stop but she refused.

He suggested she step outside to use her phone, after which she left the cinema and never came back. The 35-year-old woman also drove away in her car, in which she had driven them both, leaving him without a ride home, he said.

A few days later, he messaged her asking for the price of a ticket but she refused because “he took me out on a date”, she said. “This is crazy,” “I’m not a bad woman. I just went out on a date.” She said.

Mr Vezmar filed the petition in the small claims court in Travis County. The texting was a “direct violation” of the cinema’s policy and the woman “adversely” affected Mr Vezmar’s viewing experience and that of other patrons, the petition states.

“While damages sought are modest, the principle is important as defendant’s behaviour is a threat to civilised society,” it says. The pair were reunited at the cinema on Thursday in an attempt to sort out the dispute.

“The date just didn’t work out,” she told him during the reunion, she also apologised and handed him the money, asking him to “just leave this alone.” Mr Vezmar accepted the apology and said he would withdraw the lawsuit. He also said he would donate the money to charity.

Married Woman arrested for selling four of her children

The police have arrested a housewife and detained her at Area M Command, Idimu for allegedly selling four out of her five children to different people without the knowledge of her husband.

The wife simply identified as Vicky was arrested following a petition by her husband to the Area Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police, ACP Austines Akika.

Police sources said the suspect was selling the children one after the other and successfully sold four, remaining just a child. What is her mission?

According to PM Express, she lied to her husband that she took the kids to their relation until the husband later discover she has sold them to some undisclosed buyers.

The secret came to the open recently after she sold the last child for N400,000 and her husband was tipped by their neighbour who knew about it.

Thus, the husband reported to the police and she was arrested and detained at the Command Cell.

She was said to have already confessed to the police while efforts were already being made to rescue the children and arrest the buyers.

However, investigations revealed the illegal sales without her husband knowing happened because the man, who rented an apartment in Idimu area of Lagos, was working outside Lagos, where he stays during the week and only return home weekend or monthly.

It was gathered while the husband was away, the woman plotted to be selling the children and deceived her husband they were taken to their relations.

It was learnt that the husband's efforts to locate the relations where the wife claimed she took those children to was fruitless.

This made the man to be suspicious before her acts were finally exposed.

As at the time of this report, the wife was still detained at the cell.

Police detectives are going after the buyers.
