Company slams Samung with a N65M law suit over copy right infringement

An Abuja-based company, Eagle Eye Production Limited has sued Samsung Electronics West Africa Limited for alleged copyright infringement over a video the technology company used as an advert.
Samsung launched its Galaxy Note 8 last August with a promotional visual clip titled ‘Night Life in Lagos with Galaxy Note 8’.
The company’s ad clip had in it an image of Lekki Ikoyi Link Bridge in Lagos, which was allegedly cut from a video posted to YouTube by Eagle Eye Production Limited in April 2015, with the title: ‘Lekki Ikoyi Link Bridge at Night’.
The alleged original creators of the video say they got no monetary compensation, nor any acknowledgement, for Samsung’s alleged usage of their clip in the ad.

Samsung, however, after being served a notice on the alleged copyright infringement, claims it didn’t create the video, but only outsourced the job to one Cheil Communications Nigeria Limited.
Cheil Communications, in turn, said it employed the services of another media company, Ringier Media Nigeria Limited, to create the ad for Samsung’s use.

FG has reportedly paid 14 whistleblowers the sum of N439Million

For helping the federal government rake in N13.8 billion from tax evaders,14 whistle blowers have been rewarded with the sum of N439.276 million.

The informants tipped off government on the affected tax evaders ,Finance Minister Kemi Adeosun told reporters.

“The payment was made this week after the federal government received the sum of N13.8 billion from the affected tax evaders, mostly corporate organizations, based on tips from whistleblowers,” the minister said.

This reward is different from that given to those who provide information on stolen public funds.

By June 2017 a total N375.8 million had been paid to the first batch of 20 providers of information on stolen funds under the Whistleblower Policy.

The payment, of various amounts totalling N375,875,000, was in respect of the recovery of N11,635,000,000.

Government, according to Adeosun, is actively preparing cases for prosecution against tax evaders by the end of next month when the tax amnesty will end.

She said the Voluntary Assets and Income Declaration Scheme (VAIDS) is faring well as “we are getting far more tips on tax evasions, which of course is a crime against us all.”

She said that since the introduction of the VAIDS in 2017 to peacefully bring in more tax payers into the tax net to boost revenue, the Federal Government’s data mining efforts have identified over 130,000 high net worth individuals and companies that have potential tax underpayments issues against them.

The minister also told reporters of how some people she did not identify had tried to sell off over 100 government properties abroad.

APC has derailed and is now playing politics says Gov.Okorocha

Imo State governor and chairman of the All Progressives Congress Governor’s Forum, Rochas Okorocha, has said his party has derailed and now practises “Peoples Democratic Party kind of politics.”

Mr Okorocha, stated in Abuja at the declaration of Adams Oshiomole, former governor of Edo State, to run for office of national chairman of the party.

Mr Okoracha, who was at the event to show his support for the governor and endorse his bid, said he believes in Mr Oshiomhole’s capacity to address some issues in the party.

“Another thing I think Oshiomole will address is that our party has begun to play the same kind of politics like PDP. All of a sudden we have started derailing and playing the PDP kind of politics. This started by some of those people who found themselves in political office especially appointment, who did not win their booths and wards.

He said Mr Oshiomhole should also address the weakness of the party in the South-South and South-East. He said he believed Mr Oshiomhole can help strengthen it in those parts of the country.
