Fish dealers rejoice over boom in their business due to Good Friday

Fish and the sellers

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in separate interviews  on Friday, some of the dealers attributed the boom to the Chiristians’  abstinence from eating meat on a Good Friday  when Jesus Christ’s crucifixion took place on the Cross of Calvary.
Mrs Mary Ijezie, a fish dealer at Garki Market said she had transacted so much business since she opened her shop to customers, although she did not disclose  the volume of  sales.
According to Ijezie, customers  were buying  fish, either dried or fresh at exorbitant prices  in order to observe the significance  of Good Friday, adding that the  catholic faithful  were prominent among her customers.
She explained that a kilogramme of fish was going to her customers for N1,000 while the largest size of catfish was selling between N3,000 and N5,000.
Mrs Lauretta Abor, a dealer in  frozen  fish at Ogbete Main Market, also  said  she recorded good sales since she resumed business, attributing the boom to  the large number of Christians who were observing Good Friday.
Abor said that a carton of fish was selling for  between N16, 000 and N18, 000, adding that a unit of frozen fish  sold for between N300 and N600.
We are always prepared for this day because it must surely come for us to make good sales and be happy at the end of the day,” she said.

Checkout President Buhari's full Easter message to Nigerians

In his message released on Thursday, the president thanked God for the opportunity to celebrate another Easter despite current challenges.

Noting that Easter is the season in which Christians mark the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, which represents the triumph of good over evil and life over death, Buhari added that the period is also a time to show love, forgiveness, compassion and renewed hope in the Grace of God.

He said further: “The Holy Scripture affirms that happiness and fulfilment in life do not flow from acquiring the best things in life, but in being richer in a relationship with God and fellow human beings.

Let us use the opportunity of this special season to deeply reflect on how every one of us can imbibe the profound teachings of Jesus Christ with renewed vigour.

In so doing and by placing the joy, comfort and happiness of others above ours, we will make a statement that vices such as, hate speech, bigotry, corruption, banditry and terrorism have no place in our nation. We must do all it takes to love our neighbours and display increased spirit of tolerance and accommodation.

I commend those who recognise and support our unwavering efforts to prevent the spread of conflicts in our communities; check wanton criminality and the taking of innocent lives; unite the country; and steer the ship of state to a steady path of economic growth, job creation and development.

While we enjoin law-abiding fellow compatriots to work for peace and social justice in our beloved country, let there be no doubt of our resolve to firmly resist others who may want to make cheap political capital out of current national security challenges.

Our programmes and policies in the last three years have resulted in bringing down the prices of staple crops; gradual improvement of road, rail and electricity infrastructure; and making Nigeria the preferred destination for investors. More than ever before, we are ready to consolidate on these gains and ensure that we improve the lot of our communities in the years ahead.

Thankfully, our Dapchi schoolgirls who were safely released recently after 30 agonizing days in the hands of their abductors, have been reunited with their families. I am very optimistic that all others, including the Chibok girls who are still in captivity will be safely released unconditionally to their families. I urge you to continue to pray for their safe return.

In the meantime, I have given clear instructions to our security agencies to prioritise safety in schools in areas where the humanitarian and security situation are still dire, in addition to ensuring adequate protection of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

As we approach the period of campaigns, I appeal to our political actors and other stakeholders to resist any act that could mar the integrity of our electoral process.

I am optimistic that with God on our side, the dark days of Nigeria’s elections being manipulated by violence and rigging by corrupt politicians and their agents are over. They are confined to the dustbin of history where they rightly belong. I remain committed to bequeathing a legacy of supremacy of the people’s will through the ballot box.

May this year’s Easter celebration bring us renewed hope and confidence as a great nation.”

Uber puts an end to its self-driving car test after fatal crash in California

uber self driving volvo

Uber is completely halting its tests of self-driving car technology in its home state of California following a fatal crash in Arizona involving a pedestrian earlier this month the first death caused by an autonomous vehicle.
The company has decided not to reapply for a permit to test autonomous vehicles with the California DMV in the wake of the crash, a spokesperson told Business Insider, ending its tests in the state for the immediate future.
In a statement, a spokesperson said: "We proactively
suspended our self-driving operations, including in California, immediately following the Tempe incident. Given this, we decided to not reapply for a California DMV permit with the understanding that our self-driving vehicles would not operate on public roads in the immediate future."
On Monday, Arizona's governor Doug Ducey suspended Uber's self-driving car program in the state, calling it an "unquestionable failure" to comply with safety expectations.
The fatal crash coul be a serious crisis for Uber. If its vehicles are found to have been at fault in the accident, the consequences could be a major threat to its self-driving car ambitions, which ex-CEO Travis Kalanick once said were pivotal to the company's long-term survival.
One of its cars in autonomous mode struck a pedestrian crossing the road while pushing a bicycle, and she died of her injuries.

Armed police Storm NBA office to prevent Peple from protesting during Buhari's visit

Dozens of armed police officers have laid siege at the secretariat of the Ikeja branch of the Nigerian Bar Association over the body’s decision to stage a protest on Thursday.

Adeshina Ogunlana, the chairman of Ikeja NBA, confirmed the development to newsmen yesterday evening.

“The police have invaded my secretariat, there are about 50 of them who are armed, and they are saying that they don’t want the protest tomorrow,” Mr. Ogunlana said over the phone on Wednesday night.

“And we told them that we are not interested in disrupting the presidential visit, our protest is not going to take place in Ikeja, and that there is no need for any alarm. We are not blocking any route.”

President Muhammadu Buhari is scheduled to arrive Lagos on Thursday for a two-day official visit.

After a march two weeks ago to protest the state government’s newly introduced land use charge, the lawyers had planned another round of protest to coincide with the president’s visit.

The police siege on Wednesday evening came shortly after police authorities issued a statement ordering the lawyers to shelve their planned protest on Thursday.

The statement issued by Chike Oti, the spokesperson of the Lagos State Police Command, said the police would not tolerate any protest from the NBA or any group during Mr. Buhari’s visit.

“The CP believes strongly that the planned protest by the NBA is the handiwork of mischief makers who are using the NBA as a launching pad to possibly compromise the security emplaced for the presidential visit,” Mr. Oti, a superintendent of Police, said in the statement.

Singer Christina Aguilera covers Paper Magazine Make up free

Christina Aguilera is on the cover of Paper Magazine’s “Transformation 2018” issue with no makeup on.

“I’ve always been someone that obviously loves to experiment, loves theatrics, loves to create a storyline and play a character in a video or through stage. I’m a performer, that’s who I am by nature. But I’m at the place, even musically, where it’s a liberating feeling to be able to strip it all back and appreciate who you are and your raw beauty,” she said about her love for experimenting.
Talking about why she decided to move on from being a judge in The Voice, she said, “I can’t stay in a stagnant place for too long, which is why I think the position I was in with television just became very stifling,” she said. “I need movement, I need to go explore, be an artist, create and transform.”
The singer also talked how things are better for new artists in the entertainment undustry saying, “They don’t have as much backlash when they come out on the scene. And I did. It was a very interesting and controversial time for me.”
“Either women are not sexual enough or we’re not fulfilling enough of a fantasy for you, but then if we’re overtly sexual or feeling empowered in a certain kind of way, then we’re shamed for it. Madonna had to go through it in her day, and she paved the way for my generation to come up. And paying it forward, now a younger generation is coming up and I’m loving what I’m seeing. It’s so incredible.”

Nigerian customs authority intercept a tanker loaded with 589 bags of rice

The Nigeria Customs Service has arrested four suspects in Sokoto who allegedly smuggled 589 bags of imported rice concealed in a petrol tanker.

Comptroller of NCS in Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara Command, Mr. Nasir Ahmad, disclosed this to newsmen on Tuesday in Sokoto.

He said when the bags of rice were removed from the petrol tank, they have been contaminated by black oil, which is dangerous to human health.

He appealed to the people, especially those residing in border communities, to assist officials of the command with relevant information to track down smugglers.

According to him, it was the third time the command would be intercepting such illegal goods in a tanker.

FG has allegedly recovered N143.89bn from corrupt officials, so why are we still broke?

Ikoyi Loot: Buhari vows to deal with culprits

The Federal Government said it recovered more than N143. 89 billion from corrupt officials through the implementation of the Whistle Blower policy.
The Presidential Initiative on Continuous Audit (PICA) disclosed this in a report made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja.
The report showed that government had successfully recovered N7.8 billion, 378 million dollars and 27,800 pounds sterling.
According to the report, since the policy was introduced in 2016 to fight financial crimes and corruption,  PICA has received 8,373 tips.
The report said 1,231 tips received were on financial crimes.
It further showed that the Federal Government was able to investigate 791 cases out of which 534 were completed.
It also showed that the Federal Government had also been able to save N208 billion through the payroll audit of its Ministries Department and Agencies (MDAs).
According to the report, N97.94 billion was saved in 2016, while N110.46 billion was saved in 2017.
It said the saving was from the recovery of salaries paid to ex-diplomats, reduction in personnel costs of MDAs and reduction in non-regular allowances of the armed forces,  para-military agencies and health institutions.

Residents in Gbagada flee as monkeys attack and occupy their homes

Invasion by monkeys from natural habitat is forcing many residents of Soluyi/Sosanya Community in Gbagada area of Lagos State, to flee.
Some of the residents told the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos on Monday that they could no longer withstand the situation.
They called on the state government to save the community from the trouble, saying that the animals forced their ways into their rooms, destroying window and door nets, foodstuffs and other items.
The Chairman of the community’s Landlord Association, Mr Adigun Olaleye, said that it had become difficult for the community to curtail the monkeys and their destructive attitude.
He said that the invasion might have resulted from the nearness of the community to a swamp forest that separated the community from Ifako area.
According to him, the monkeys come into residences at any time including early morning and gain entrance into rooms even if the houses are locked.
Olalaye told NAN that the community had written a letter to the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture as regards the situation but had yet to get a relief.
“They said we would have to pay for them to come and pack the monkeys,” he said.
He said that the invasion had been on for years but recently became unbearable.
Olaleye appealed to the state government to urgently intervene.
Narrating her ordeal, a journalist who lives in the community, Mrs Funmilola  Gboteku, told NAN that the monkeys had forced her family to flee.
“Many times, these monkeys come to the neighbourhood to destroy our property. Once they see food items inside a house, they direct all their energies at gaining entrance forcefully.
“The monkeys are in the habit of tearing the protective nets on windows to gain entrance and eat whatever they find in the house.
“I have had to replace the protective nets several times;  I am tired of doing it.
“I have been locking my windows but locking of windows has disadvantages; there is no cross ventilation in the house and as a result, we suffer heat,’’ she told NAN.

Your investment in the Education and health sector is not enough says Bill gates to FG

Bill Gates, world’s second richest man, says the federal government’s investments in young people, especially in areas of health and education, is not good enough.

He said this in an interview with CNN. The co-chairman of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation reiterated the comments he made when he spoke at the expanded national economic council meeting on Thursday.

At the meeting which was presided over by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, Gates had said the execution priorities of the economic recovery and growth plan do not reflect the true needs of Nigerians.

“The Nigerian government’s economic recovery and growth plan identify investing in our people as one of three strategic objectives. But the execution priorities don’t fully reflect people’s needs, prioritising physical capital over human capital,” he had said.

“People without roads, ports, and factories can’t flourish. And roads, ports and factories without skilled workers to build and manage them can’t sustain an economy.”

Nasir el-Rufai, governor of Kaduna state, who was at the meeting had defended the federal government, saying Gates’ comment was incorrect.

But in the chat with CNN, the billionaire businessman defended his criticism of the Nigerian government.

He said Nigeria would become an engine of growth if the government gets health and education right.

“As a partner in Nigeria, I am saying the current plan is inadequate. Nigeria has all these young people and the current quality and quantity of investment in these young generations; in health and education just isn’t good enough. So, I was very direct,” he told CNN.

“If they can get health and education right, they will be an engine of growth not just for themselves but for all of Africa.”

The plight of MMM Nigerian investors worsen as MMM founder Mavrodi dies at 62

Russian businessman, Sergei Mavrodi, whose MMM pyramid scheme deprived millions of Russians of their savings in the 1990s, has died of a heart attack.

Reports said the 62-year-old was rushed to a hospital late on March 25, following complaints of chest pain. He died several hours later.

According to Moskovsky Komsomolets, a Moscow-based newspaper, Mavrodi complained of weakness and pain in the heart and was hospitalised.

“Mavrodi was hospitalised in the 67th city hospital. He could not be saved – he died this morning,” the paper reported.

Mavrodi promised returns of 20 per cent to 75 per cent a month, as well as lotteries and bonuses for investors.

As soon as the number of new clients stopped growing, the pyramid collapsed, causing huge financial losses for at least 10 million people, in some cases leaving them in destitution.

The ponzi scheme came to Nigeria in 2016 and many people rushed at it, made gains and invited their family members and friends who invested millions of naira.

The scheme went on a one-month break in December 2016 before its eventual collapse with the funds of many Nigerians trapped in it.

While some Nigerians, who lost money to the ponzi scheme, described the news of Mavrodi’s death as fake, others greeted the news with excitement.
