Ugandans believe Wizkid let them down for cancelling his scheduled concert in their country, despite his apology.
This has led to the show’s organisers, Face TV, to file charges for cheating, conspiracy to defraud and obtaining money by false pretences against him.
The charges stem from substantial expenses in booking and re-booking flights, hotel, venue, advertising and promotions for the concert – which over 25,000 people had already bought tickets for – which gross over $300,000 (over N144m), according to documents filed by the Chief Magistrates Court of Buganda.
Between August 29 and November 29 2016, the show promoters allegedly paid Sunday Are, Wizkid’s manager, the full performance fee of US$60,000, a brokerage fee of US$5,000 and US$3,000 being per diem for the days they were going to stay in Uganda.
The Ugandan promoters also want Interpol to step in, after obtaining a warrant of arrest on the ailing Nigerian singer.
Wizkid and his manager are expected to appear in court on or before January 16, 2017, as they face a minimum fine of N150m spent in preparation for the show, which would have been the biggest in the country this year.
‘We’re on it, we’re talking to them, I need to know who sent it,’ Wizkid‘s manager, Sunday Are told Thenetng.
Nigerian fans are rallying round the pop star, even as discussions are ongoing between both parties.
The ‘Ojuelegba’ singer is in the United States, following doctors’ instruction to cancel his December and January 2017 shows, due to his ill health.
