Company slams Samung with a N65M law suit over copy right infringement

An Abuja-based company, Eagle Eye Production Limited has sued Samsung Electronics West Africa Limited for alleged copyright infringement over a video the technology company used as an advert.
Samsung launched its Galaxy Note 8 last August with a promotional visual clip titled ‘Night Life in Lagos with Galaxy Note 8’.
The company’s ad clip had in it an image of Lekki Ikoyi Link Bridge in Lagos, which was allegedly cut from a video posted to YouTube by Eagle Eye Production Limited in April 2015, with the title: ‘Lekki Ikoyi Link Bridge at Night’.
The alleged original creators of the video say they got no monetary compensation, nor any acknowledgement, for Samsung’s alleged usage of their clip in the ad.

Samsung, however, after being served a notice on the alleged copyright infringement, claims it didn’t create the video, but only outsourced the job to one Cheil Communications Nigeria Limited.
Cheil Communications, in turn, said it employed the services of another media company, Ringier Media Nigeria Limited, to create the ad for Samsung’s use.

FG has reportedly paid 14 whistleblowers the sum of N439Million

For helping the federal government rake in N13.8 billion from tax evaders,14 whistle blowers have been rewarded with the sum of N439.276 million.

The informants tipped off government on the affected tax evaders ,Finance Minister Kemi Adeosun told reporters.

“The payment was made this week after the federal government received the sum of N13.8 billion from the affected tax evaders, mostly corporate organizations, based on tips from whistleblowers,” the minister said.

This reward is different from that given to those who provide information on stolen public funds.

By June 2017 a total N375.8 million had been paid to the first batch of 20 providers of information on stolen funds under the Whistleblower Policy.

The payment, of various amounts totalling N375,875,000, was in respect of the recovery of N11,635,000,000.

Government, according to Adeosun, is actively preparing cases for prosecution against tax evaders by the end of next month when the tax amnesty will end.

She said the Voluntary Assets and Income Declaration Scheme (VAIDS) is faring well as “we are getting far more tips on tax evasions, which of course is a crime against us all.”

She said that since the introduction of the VAIDS in 2017 to peacefully bring in more tax payers into the tax net to boost revenue, the Federal Government’s data mining efforts have identified over 130,000 high net worth individuals and companies that have potential tax underpayments issues against them.

The minister also told reporters of how some people she did not identify had tried to sell off over 100 government properties abroad.

APC has derailed and is now playing politics says Gov.Okorocha

Imo State governor and chairman of the All Progressives Congress Governor’s Forum, Rochas Okorocha, has said his party has derailed and now practises “Peoples Democratic Party kind of politics.”

Mr Okorocha, stated in Abuja at the declaration of Adams Oshiomole, former governor of Edo State, to run for office of national chairman of the party.

Mr Okoracha, who was at the event to show his support for the governor and endorse his bid, said he believes in Mr Oshiomhole’s capacity to address some issues in the party.

“Another thing I think Oshiomole will address is that our party has begun to play the same kind of politics like PDP. All of a sudden we have started derailing and playing the PDP kind of politics. This started by some of those people who found themselves in political office especially appointment, who did not win their booths and wards.

He said Mr Oshiomhole should also address the weakness of the party in the South-South and South-East. He said he believed Mr Oshiomhole can help strengthen it in those parts of the country.

Dr.Dre loses trademark name battle to a Doctor named Doctor Drai

American rapper, Dr. Dre, has lost a legal battle to an actual doctor named Dr. Drai. Dr. Draion M. Burch, an OBGYN based in Pennsylvania, tried to trademark his name back in 2015 as ‘Dr. Drai’. However, his motion was blocked by Dr. Dre, who claimed that the gynecologist would cause ‘confusion’ through a ‘suggested connection’.
Drai fought back claiming that Dre’s claims are baseless because Dr. Dre’s reputation is of no use to his career. Furthermore, Drai is Burch’s actual name and he is actually a doctor.
Here are his words:

‘It is not likely that consumers will recognize Applicant’s Dr. Drai’s marks as referring to Dr. Dre because Dr. Dre is not a medical doctor nor is he qualified to provide any type of medical services or sell products specifically in the medical or healthcare industry. Being an OB-GYN, I cannot be associated with anyone that has any kind of misogynistic speech because it’s a bad reflection on me as a doctor…That’s my name.’
Consequently, the court ruled in Dr. Drai’s favour by dismissing Dr. Dre’s opposing claim. Here’s the official ruling:
‘[The opposition cases] are dismissed on the likelihood of confusion and false suggestion of a connection grounds.’

Media personality Toolz to launch her clothing line for plus size women

Tolu Oniru-Demuren, the popular Media Personality who goes by the name Toolz has created an image for herself in the media industry and at the same time served as an inspiration for women in Nigeria and beyond.
The brand which she named “Sablier” aims to define, represent, and capture every curvy woman’s beauty.

She says:
The journey to accepting my body hasn’t really been a smooth one. Growing up, I wasn’t particularly confident. As a plus-size and curvy girl, you tend to feel out of place – my body type wasn’t the hot thing back then. I just didn’t fit in. I became very self-conscious – I thought my hips were too wide…my bum was too big, and I was on the short side.
As a teenager, you are dealing with a lot, especially when it comes to self-identity and accepting yourself. And you often get confused about what beautiful is. My self-consciousness got so bad at one point that I had to cover up all the time. In the middle of summer, I would wear a light coat to cover up my hips, and people thought I was weird. Clothes shopping was a bit of nightmare, not to talk of shopping for lingerie. Most of the lingerie in plus sizes were quite unattractive; boring styles and colours with super thick straps. Sadly, inclusivity wasn’t such a big thing when I was growing up, you were basically stuck with what was available.
Later in life, I began to notice and research curvy/plus size models like Tabria Majors, Candice Huffine, Anita Marshall and Ashley Graham – her confidence is incredible! In an industry that is notoriously discriminating about anyone above a size 8, seeing this beautiful and curvy ladies flourish was magical. I was extremely inspired to say the least.
Being in the public eye also had a big impact on my ‘acceptance journey’. I have been bashed and shamed about my body on so many occasions, I can’t even count. The first few times it happened, I was very hurt, because there was always so much venom behind the attacks, and I would be at home in tears thinking what did I do to anyone to warrant this? Unfortunately, this comes with being in the public eye, and I soon managed to get thick skin.
On the positive side, as I got more popular I began getting messages from women who admired me for being one of a few plus size women in the public eye. I would get messages from young women who had contemplated suicide because they looked different, and they were being bullied for that. They would write and say how seeing pictures of me boosted their confidence – making them accept themselves and their bodies. These comments made me realize that my presence and visibility in the industry was having a positive impact on at least a few people.
My experience strengthened me and gave me a voice – one which I have decided to use in empowering and boosting the confidence of plus-size women like me – those who are currently in a physical and psychological battle to accept their own bodies.
I am Tolu Oniru-Demuren. You probably call me ‘Toolz’.
Welcome to this journey with me.

Go and rest and let the Nigerian youths takeover says Ooni of Ife

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, has advised Nigeria political leaders to go home, rest and leave governance for Nigerian youths who he described as the “owners of the country.”

Ooni of Ife Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi to Olu of Warri, Ogiame, Ikenwoli at his palace in Warri South, Delta state
The monarch also commended youths in the country who he said make up 60 percent of the country’s population, for keeping the nation together because of the activities they engage themselves in.

The Ooni gave the charge during the launch of a N100 million Professional Chair and N10billion Endowment Fund for the Michael and Cecilia Ibru University, MCIU, Agbarha-Otor, Delta State.

Speaking to the leaders, the monarch said: “Youths of this nation owns this country. This country does not belong to the leaders and elders of this nation. Let the youths takeover, go and rest and rest very well.”

He stated that it is about time for the youths to have a sense of ownership by rising up to what belongs to them naturally, saying, “Very soon, the youths would start claiming what belongs to them as this country does not belong to anybody else except the youths.

“The youths of this country should please come and take charge. We should all come together and say enough is enough. You cannot tell us what we should be doing, we would tell you what we want you to do.”

Admonishing Nigerians who make their money in the country and take such monies abroad to invest, the monarch said: “Stop making money in this land and continue to spend it outside the shores of this land. It is not good, it is not adding value to this nation, and it’s not making any impact in this nation.

“It is a big shame because you are not laying good example for the youths that owns this country. You spend the money that you are making outside the land that is blessing you. Let us believe in this country, we do not have any other country or anywhere to go.

“The land too has a spirit in it, stop causing the land, stop using your mouth to say negative things about the land. Give back to the land that is blessing you in everything you do so that your dynasty can be sustained.”

Huh! Ebola is back, kills 17 individuals in Democractic Reupblic of Congo

Seventeen people in northwest Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have died from Ebola, the health ministry said on Tuesday, describing the fresh outbreak as a “public health emergency with international impact.”

“Twenty-one cases of fever with haemorrhagic indications and 17 deaths” have been recorded in Equateur province, it said, citing a notification to the ministry as of May 3.

It is the DRC’s ninth known outbreak of Ebola since 1976, when the deady viral disease was first identified in then-Zaire by a Belgian-led team.

In Geneva, the World Health Organization (WHO) said lab tests in the DRC confirmed the presence of Ebola virus in two out of five samples collected from patients.

“WHO is working closely with the government of the DRC to rapidly scale up its operations and mobilize health partners, using the model of a successful response to a similar… outbreak in 2017,” it said in a statement.

It said it had released $1 million (840,000 euros) from an emergency contingency fund, set up a coordination group and deployed more than 50 experts to work with the DRC government and health agencies.

“The action plan prepared by the health ministry has been approved,” an official statement released after a cabinet meeting said.

– No new deaths –
“Since the notification of the cases on May 3, no deaths have been reported,” it said, without specifying when the first case came to light.

The outbreak occurred in Bikoro, on the shores of Lake Tumba.

All the cases were reported from a clinic at Ilkoko Iponge, located about 30 kilometres (20 miles) from Bikoro, where treatment capacities are limited, the WHO said.

A team of experts from the WHO, Doctors without Borders (DRC) and Equateur province travelled to Bikoro on Tuesday to beef up coordination and carry out investigations, it said.

Ebola is one of the world’s most notorious diseases, being both highly infectious and extremely lethal.

It is caused by a virus that has a natural reservoir in the bat, which does not itself fall ill, but can pass the microbe on to humans who hunt it for “bushmeat”.

The virus is handed on by contact with bodily fluids — touching a sick or dead person is a well-known source of infection.

Following an incubation period of between two and 21 days, Ebola develops into a high fever, weakness, intense muscle and joint pain, headaches and a sore throat.

That is often followed by vomiting and diarrhoea, skin eruptions, kidney and liver failure, and internal and external bleeding.

The worst-ever Ebola outbreak started in December 2013 in southern Guinea before spreading to two neighbouring west African countries, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

That outbreak killed more than 11,300 people out of nearly 29,000 registered cases, according to WHO estimates, although the real figure is thought to be significantly higher.

More than 99 percent of victims were in the three West African countries, although cases occurred in other parts of the world, often stirring panic.

Here's a photo of the world's oldest tortoise Jonathan who is 186 yrs

Jonathan the giant tortoise is the world's oldest living terrestrial animal, according to a report by Dailymail.

Jonathan, who has also lost his sense of smell, was approximately 50 years old when he arrived on the small island in the south Atlantic from the Seychelles in 1882.

Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon said earlier this week: 'St Helena's most famous resident, Jonathan the tortoise, is looked after by the island vet who ensures a high-standard of care to the world's oldest terrestrial animal.

'After much deliberation on the island, the vet decided removing Jonathan's cataracts was too high-risk a procedure.'

The Conservative peer added that Jonathan continues to lead an active life.

US members of Congress reportedly sleep in their offices to save cash

An increasing number of US Congress members, are sleeping in their Capitol Hill offices to save some money during the work week. And they are blaming decade-long stagnant salaries and Washington’s steep cost of living for their ordeal.

“Washington is too expensive,”
said Rep. Dan Donovan (Republican-Staten Island), who credits the cot that he sleeps on in a tiny alcove in his office as the reason he is able to serve in Congress while still paying his New York City housing costs.

“If we go to the point where you have to rent or have to buy [in DC], then only millionaires would be members of Congress,” he said. “I don’t think that was the intent of our Founding Fathers.”

Many of them previously got extra compensation, or a per diem, when they served in their home-state legislatures to cover their living expenses while at the state capitol.

But as members of the House, U.S. reps receive a salary of $174,000 a year a figure that hasn’t increased in nearly a decade and no housing allowance, while working in a city where a sparse one-bedroom pad can start at $2,000 a month. Meanwhile, they also have to pay to maintain a residence in their home state.

Nigerians cry out about the alarming rate at which ATM's are ripping them off

Commercial Bank customers within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have decried excess charges by banks through Automated Teller Machine (ATM) withdrawals.

Some customers who spoke to a News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent, said they dreaded making withdrawals using other banks ATMs because of the continued charge of N65 for every transaction.

According to the customers, most banks within the city centre have programmed their ATMs to dispense only N10,000 or less per transaction, thus ripping off customers withdrawing more than that amount.

The customers complained that if they had to withdraw N100,000 or more through other banks ATM, it meant they would lose so much money.

They, however, called on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and other relevant authorities to look into the matter so as to help poor Nigerians.

Miss Agatha Young, a First Bank customer, said, “I live in Kubwa, one of the suburbs around the city centre and almost all the banks ATMs in my area dispense maximum of N10,000.

“Recently, I needed to withdraw N200,000 and my bank’s ATM was crowded, so I went to use another bank’s ATM only to discover that the machine was dispensing only N10,000 per transaction.

“I was only able to withdraw N150,000 because other customers were waiting on the queue and I was tired of going through the same process.

“I also discovered I was charged almost N1000 for that transaction as I had exceeded three withdrawal limit using the other bank’s ATM, which is outrageous.’’

I have moved on says Collins Nina's boyfriend whom she cheated on with Miracle

One of the housemates, Nina, is believed to have made love in the house with another contestant, Miracle. After she left the house, Nina also confirmed that she indeed got down with Miracle on several occasions.

She also stated that she wasn’t sure about continuing her relationship. She had said during an interview, “We had sex several times, yes. But it was just us being human. Me and Miracle have feelings for each other. We cannot hide; we don’t pretend. That was just living our lives in the Big Brother House.”

In another interview, when she was asked if she had been to see her boyfriend whom she was dating before she went into the house, she said, “I don’t think I want to do that. I don’t want any negative vibes around me right me.”

However, in a chat with Punch Newspaper, Collins maintained that he had moved on. He said, “I really don’t want to comment on this issue. I have moved on with my life and that’s all that matters.”

When pressed for further comments, he stressed, “I don’t want it to seem like I’m seeking for cheap publicity and I don’t want the issue to drag unnecessarily. That’s why I haven’t said anything.”

Meanwhile, Miracle has said he is more concerned with making money than exploring a relationship with Nina. He had explained during an interview, “My relationship with Nina does not change outside the house; we are still good friends. I plan to make good use of the friendship with Nina; at least, it will reduce the proximity of female fans and all. With her, it is easier to set the barrier.

“Yes, we are still good friends. We can be (together in future). I have feelings for her but there is time for everything. We are both young now and marriage is not the next thing. The goal is to make money o (laughs). You never can tell what happens though and I hope you know that Nina and I are both from Imo State. So, anything can happen.”
